Dr. Nedal Shami is the Chief Executive Officer of CareAbout Health, a physician-led organization dedicated to transforming healthcare delivery through value-based care models. Under his leadership, CareAbout Health has grown to serve over one million lives, leveraging advanced technologies and data to improve care coordination, patient outcomes, and overall satisfaction. His strategic vision has positioned CareAbout Health as a leader in transforming healthcare access, particularly for aging and underserved populations.
Before founding CareAbout Health, Dr. Shami co-founded CityMD in 2010, serving as Chief Operating Officer and later Chief Growth Officer and board member. During his tenure, he played a pivotal role in scaling the company from a single location to over 120 sites, contributing to its reputation as one of the largest and most trusted urgent care providers in the country. His expertise in mergers and acquisitions, payer strategies, and health system partnerships helped shape CityMD’s trajectory and solidify its place in the healthcare industry.
In addition to his role at CareAbout, Dr. Shami has served on several boards ranging from the largest provider of physical therapy services in the United States, integrated multispecialty medical groups, consumer brands and academic institutions. He is also an Operating Partner at Ascend Partners, a healthcare-focused private equity firm.
Dr. Shami is a board-certified emergency medicine physician with clinical experience in Level I trauma centers and tertiary medical institutions. He completed his residency in Emergency Medicine at Long Island Jewish Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine, where he served as Chief Resident. He also completed an internship in Internal Medicine at Montefiore Medical Center. Dr. Shami earned his medical degree with Cum Laude honors from University College Dublin and holds a Bachelor of Science in Biology from New York University.
Outside of his professional pursuits, Dr. Shami is actively involved in philanthropic work, including disaster relief and initiatives aimed at improving children’s access to healthcare, education, and the arts. Dr. Shami resides in lower Manhattan with his wife, three children, and beloved dog. In his leisure time, he indulges in his passion for skiing, explores the skies as a recreational pilot, savors diverse cuisines as a foodie, and embarks on exciting journeys as an avid traveler.
